Montgomery Union Station and Trainshed is a historic transportation hub located in Montgomery, Alabama. The station was originally built in 1898 and served as a vital transportation hub for the city for many years. Today, the station is a popular tourist destination and a symbol of the city’s rich history.
The station was designed by the famous architect Frank Pierce Milburn, who also designed other notable buildings such as the Alabama State Capitol. The building’s neoclassical style is characterized by its grand façade, large columns, and ornate detailing. The interior of the station is equally impressive, featuring a large waiting room with high ceilings, grand archways, and original terrazzo floors.
The trainshed, which covers over six acres, was added to the station in 1906 to provide shelter for passengers and trains. It is one of the largest remaining trainsheds in the United States and is an excellent example of the innovative engineering techniques used in the early 20th century. The shed is supported by a system of steel trusses, which allowed for an open and unobstructed space for trains to pass through.
Today, Montgomery Union Station and Trainshed is a popular venue for events, including concerts, weddings, conferences, and other special occasions. It has been beautifully restored and is a testament to the city’s commitment to preserving its rich history. Visitors can take a tour of the station and learn about its fascinating history, or simply admire its impressive architecture and design.
