Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve is a 1,040 acres nature preserve located in the City of Birmingham's historic South East Lake neighborhood in eastern portion of Jefferson County, Alabama. It is the largest privately held 501 (c) (3) urban nature preserves in the United States. From the late 19th century through the 1950’s Ruffner Mountain was mined for iron ore.

Things To Do

Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve host 14 miles of trails for running and hiking, wheeled vehicles now allowed. Wharton Lookout Tower is located on the Nature Preserve

Hours

The Nature Center at Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve is closed on Mondays. The Trails are open and free to the public everyday, from dawn to dusk.
