Fern Cave National Wildlife Refuge, Alabama
Fern Cave National Wildlife Refuge is a 199-acre National Wildlife Refuge located in Jackson County near Paint Rock, Alabama in northeastern Alabama. It is Established in 1981 and
Managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. Fern Cave is home to the largest colony of federally endangered gray bats in the US.
Fern Cave National Wildlife Refuge host one of the most complex cave systems is the country. The refuge is home to one of the largest wintering colony of gray bats in the country. It is also is home to the American Hart's-tongue fern which is an endangered species.
The cave system has some 450 foot vertical drops and sections up to 15 miles long. It is internationally and nationally known as one of the most amazing cave systems. Fern Cave National Wildlife Refuge is located near Gurley, Alabama.
Fern Cave is not open to the public, park closes around dusk.
